The hearing is set for 10 am ET, wherein Ford will speak publicly about her allegation of sexual assault against the Supreme Court nominee. Christine Blasey Ford's allegation that Kavanaugh drunkenly assaulted her when they were teenagers has raised a political storm in the #MeToo era, and the GOP's all-male presence on the panel made some want a woman to question Ford. Meanwhile, Democrats were helping shape a narrative that favored Ford. "About 90-95% of victims know the person who is offending against them", Mitchell said. "Your reservation is confirmed Rachel Mitchell".
"The right thing to do is to listen to Ms. Ford on Thursday and let the process go forward", Cornyn said.
As her time for questioning Ford was coming to an end, Mitchell herself seemed to give voice to her exasperation with her task when she rhetorically asked Ford about the best way to question victims of sex crimes.
It'll easily be the highest-profile case of Mitchell's long and distinguished career handling sex crimes, an area she said she didn't initially intend to focus on early in her career but one she felt drawn to after clerking at a law firm and watching a senior lawyer prosecute a youth choir director.
The woman who posed questions to Ford, Arizona prosecutor Rachel Mitchell, remained in the room but sat mute while the afternoon wore on. I'm very appreciative that Rachel Mitchell has stepped forward to serve in this important and serious role.
Trump's allies, however, felt that Mitchell did not press Ford hard enough, failing to poke holes in her story. And she's the one Republicans hired to make them look good!
Nevertheless, Mitchell was chosen by Judiciary Committee chair Chuck Grassley to "depoliticize the process and get to the truth", as said in a statement. Michael Bromwich, an attorney for Ford, said previously in a statement, "This is not a criminal trial for which the involvement of an experienced sex crimes prosecutor would be appropriate".
The tenor of the questions suggested Mitchell was trying, if gently, to question the reliability of Ford's recollections and portray Ford as a pawn of Democrats who are out to stop Kavanaugh at any cost. "The goal should be to develop the relevant facts, not try a case". She handled almost all his immigration cases and the cases involving sex crimes.
Mitchell now serves as the Deputy County Attorney in the Maricopa County Attorney's Office in Phoenix and is also is the division chief of the Special Victims Division, which handles cases of domestic violence, sex crimes, and auto theft.
Maricopa County is the same county of Joe Arpaio, the former controversial sheriff who, the Justice Department alleged in 2011, failed to prosecute hundreds of sex crimes during his time in office. Mitchell "formed a multidisciplinary team to develop a victim-centered Sexual Assault Protocol for investigations, forensic medical exams, victim notification and prosecution of sex offenses, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office".
Last year, the county attorney's office introduced a sex crimes protocol - the first in its history.
