Russian Federation to give Syria S-300 air defence after accusations against Israel

Asked about Bolton's statement that US troops will stay in Syria as long as Iran forces and proxies are there, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon, "Right now our troops inside Syria are there for one objective, and that's under the United Nations authorization about defeating ISIS".

"Not only Syrian air defense will become more capable, but it will be necessary to keep in mind the presence of Russian operators at the Syrian air defense systems".

Russia has chose to arm its Syrian partners with an advanced anti-aircraft weapons system and to target the electronic systems of any military aircraft that launches strikes in Syrian territory, the Russian defence ministry said Monday in response to losing a spy plane last week.

Despite American condemnation and the Israeli state of alert with the Russian Defense Ministry announcement on Monday that it will supply the Syrian regime with S-300 defense missiles, it seems that Russia is determined to proceed with its project.

The Russian reconnaissance plane was downed last Monday after Israeli jets attacked targets in Latakia province. The incident in which Syrian air defenses shot down a Russian plane while responding to an Israeli airstrike has angered the Kremlin but given it an opportunity to expand its footprint.

The Israeli military in a statement later on Sunday insisted that the Israelis complied with the hot-line procedures and rejected Konashenkov's suggestions that Israeli jets were ultimately to blame for the downing.

Assad expressed his condolences for the deaths of the Russian airmen, saying they were "carrying out noble mission, fighting terrorism in Syria".

Some analysts doubted Russian Federation will actually transfer the S-300 to the government of President Bashar al-Assad, who has presided over more than seven-year-old civil war. On top of that, the Russian military will start using electronic countermeasures to jam any aircraft that would try to launch attacks off Syria's coast.

In recent years, Israel has carried out repeated air strikes in war-torn Syria against Iranian targets and what is says are advanced arm deliveries to Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

In that time, only one Israeli jet is known to have been shot down - an F-16 which crashed in northern Israel.

"The S-300 systems Russian Federation plans to supply to Syria will feature a compromise solution", said Sokov.

In Syria, Russian troops already operate advanced S-300 and S-400 anti-aircraft systems to defend their own ships and planes, but this would be a first for the Syrian air defence forces.

"Since the tragic events in the Syrian skies, I have spoken twice with President Putin, expressing deep sorrow about the loss of lives of the Russian Federation crew on the plane, that was irresponsibly shot down by Syrian fire", Netanyahu said. Syria's current anti-aircraft systems are older models that didn't stop Israel from attacking targets on Syrian territory.

"The security cabinet has instructed the IDF to continue to take action against attempts by Iran to establish a military presence in Syria while continuing the security coordination with Russian Federation", the statement read, echoing comments made by Israeli defense officials over the past week.

"In addition, three years after entering Syria, Russia wants to finish things and leave".
