This summer, Trump directed the Defense Department to begin the process of establishing a space-focused military service that would be a counterpart to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. The US President promised to return the United States to the moon and to reach Mars.
The council's recommendations are set to be made at a meeting later on Tuesday at the National Defense University in Washington, where Vice President Mike Pence is also scheduled to speak.
"The American side, especially with the arrival of the Trump's administration, has embarked on a course for total domination in outer space, just like in other areas", Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in comments quoted by TASS in response to statements of US Vice President Mike Pence, who earlier spoke of US dominance of space.
But Pence claimed that Russian Federation and China already have military operations in space and said potential threats in space include anti-satellite weapons, airborne lasers, "highly threatening in-orbit activities and evasive hypersonic missiles". In a conversation with the Washington Post during its "Transformers: Space" summit, Pence was asked if the United States was looking to renegotiate the terms of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which now bans 'weapons of mass destruction, ' but still allows for conventional weapons in orbit. "It was (yet) talking about consolidation (resources), and in the future Congress and presidential administration will be able to expand and develop space forces", said Pence.
"The time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of the armed forces of the United States, to turn the page to an evolution of our armed forces, to meet the challenges and opportunities on that limitless frontier", Pence said.
But congressional support of the Space Force proposal is not certain, and Pentagon officials have said standing up a new military service could cost billions of dollars.
The administration of U.S. President next year will be to work together with Congress for the establishment of an independent space force.
