The Detroit Lions jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the third quarter and then were able to hang on to beat the Green Bay Packers 31-23 in a Sunday afternoon National Football League match-up at Ford Field.
The Lions' third scoring drive started at the Green Bay 22, after Romeo Okwara hit Rodgers from behind to force a fumble on the second-to-last play of the first quarter, and ended in a short Matt Prater field goal. He did not participate in practice on either Wednesday or Thursday as the Packers prepared for their game against the Lions. Allison remains in the concussion protocol, but McCarthy thinks (or perhaps hopes) that Allison will clear into time for the game.
Crosby missed his first field goal try of 41 yards wide left in the first quarter, and the Lions took advantage of good field position after the miss - they started the ensuing drive at their own 31 - on a four-play, 69-yard touchdown drive.
Although Crosby is the obvious goat for leaving 13 points on the field in a eight-point defeat, it's worth noting that Aaron Rodgers wasn't particularly sharp early despite finishing the afternoon with a flourish to total 442 yards and three touchdowns.
The Packers stormed out of the locker room and scored twice - first on an aerial from Rodgers to Marquez Valdes-Scantling followed by a two-point conversion to close to within 24-8 and then on a 1-yard pass from Rodgers to Lance Kendricks followed by a failed conversion pass to trim the deficit to 24-14. I made an adjustment.
Adams, Cobb and Allison have combined for 64 catches for 768 yards and six scores this season. Crosby's five combined missed kicks are believed to be the most in a game since at least 1950.
On 3rd & 4, Aaron Rodgers impressively escaped Detroit's pass rush and ran (on a gimpy knee) for the Green Bay first down.
The young receivers feel they are equal to the challenge. "I've done this a long time, and I've never had a day where it wasn't there like that".
Detroit had success on defense, going after Rodgers with just four players and dropping seven into coverage. "And that's surprising, too, because I still think he's a really good kicker, so that was very surprising". His practice status on Friday will be a big determining factor. But at some point, this pattern of struggling and bouncing back is going to get broken.
"They're getting better", Rodgers said. "You have to have the ability to get in and out of personnel groups".
