Learning to play as a cohesive unit is a process that happens "not as fast as you guys think it's going to happen", James said, according to ESPN.

"It's not instant oatmeal". It's not that fast. You took over a team that had won just 17 games before you got here and coached it to 27 wins in your first season, 35 in your second.

James sunk 26 points, nabbed 12 rebounds and dished six assists in his debut. Los Angeles shot 48.4 per cent from the field but were only seven of 30 on three-point attempts.

LeBron James said the team needed to work on its chemistry and it would take time to develop. "To just figure out one another, figure out what we are good at, figure out what we are not so good at, how we can be better at it. It's a good first test for us, to be in a building where they haven't lost (a home opener) in the 2000s".

With the Lakers, James has joined a revamped group that includes veterans Rajon Rondo, JaVale McGee, Lance Stephenson and Michael Beasley - as well as a young core of Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart and rookie Moe Wagner. "He doesn't party. He doesn't do certain things before shows because he wants to be dialed [in], he wants to be focused for him to get his message across in that show and people who pay money to see him".

Ball came off the bench in the only preseason game the Lakers were at full strength which coincided with his return to the court from off-season knee surgery. "It is not a big deal right now".

He will have the chance to make amends on Saturday, with the Lakers hosting the Houston Rockets at the Staples Center.
