Taylor Swift, Cardi B set for American Music Awards

Thomas Rhett attends the 2018 American Music Awards at Microsoft Theater on October 9, 2018 in Los Angeles, California. And you know what else is voted on by the people? The night opens with Taylor Swift making her first awards-show performance in almost three years, and tributes promise to provide memorable moments. The show will also pay tribute to Aretha Franklin, who died in August.

No matter why you enjoy music, or what your favorite kind of music is, the 2018 American Music Awards ceremony has something in there for everybody.

Swift is nominated for the top prize - artist of the year - where she will compete with Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons, Post Malone and Drake, who ties with Cardi B for most nominations with eight.

Swift won three awards at the AMAs, but she saved politics for her last acceptance speech of the night.

Boy band BTS became the first Korean group to win an American Music Award, taking the trophy for favourite social artists.

Cardi B, who has had a breakout 12 months, was also named favorite hip-hop/rap artist, but she lost the best new artist category to Cuban-born Camila Cabello.

Other performers included Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Shawn Mendes and twenty one pilots. Host and Golden Globe-winning black-ish actress Tracee Ellis Ross wore a shirt that said, "I am a voter", and comedian-actor Billy Eichner told the audience, "The biggest election of our lifetime is happening".

Swift went on to say that she will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives, and encouraged followers to register to vote.

Swift made history by becoming the most decorated woman in the show's history with a total of 23 AMAs.
