The survey of office workers taken by workplace consultant Peldon Rose shows that the almost three-quarters of workers who want their employers to champion mental health and well-being rated this as more important than equality (48 per cent), sustainability (38 per cent) and diversity (31 per cent).

"We can no longer afford to be silenced by stigma or stymied by misguided ideas that portray these conditions as a matter of weakness or moral failing", she continued, before calling on everyone to take a stand.

The measures come as London hosts the first ever Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit, organized together with the OECD and supported by the World Health Organization (WHO).

"The lack of resources to deal with this issue is another example of a false economy brought about austerity".

A fifth (21%) of respondents admitted they are more likely to go into work when feeling unwell from a mental health problem rather than a physical illness, while 15% stated that their boss and colleagues would not take them seriously if they took time off for a mental health issue, up from 12% in 2016. Why would we not want to prevent mental health difficulties rather than try and run to keep with up with a level of demand we can not meet once difficulties have developed?

The UN chief reiterated the UN's commitment to creating a world where everyone, everywhere has someone to turn to in support of their mental health by 2030.

Half of mental health disorders arise before the age of 14, but most cases are not detected or treated until much later, according to the latest data from the World Health Organization.

"Neuropsychiatric disorders are among the leading causes of worldwide disability in young people".

May's announcement comes a day after the National Audit Office said the United Kingdom government may be "even further away than it thought" from achieving its goal of equal access to physical and mental health services for young people.

"I am delighted we are appointing Jackie Doyle-Price as our dedicated minister for suicide prevention, and I know she will make a real difference".

The Australian Journal of Rural Health, in its October issue, reports that, on average, people with mental illness die 20 years earlier than the total population's average life expectancy.
