If a player hits all six numbers to win the jackpot, they can opt for an immediate cash payment of $904 million United States or receive the $1.6-billion prize over 29 years. If so, take heart: Nobody else won the jackpot, either. No one has won since July 24.

Mega Millions tickets are sold in 44 USA states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands.

The amount of the jackpot increased after no winning ticket was drawn on Friday.

There is a one in 292.2 million chance of winning the Powerball lottery and a one in 302.5 million chance of winning the Mega Millions.

Mega Millions lead director Gordon Medenica called it "uncharted territory".

Typically if someone wins the jackpot, MegaMillions updates its website to restart the jackpot at $40 million. Ticket sales for the next drawing end at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. The jackpot could rise even more by then, depending on how many tickets sell over the next few days, Medenica said.

The prize was shared by winners in Kansas, Illinois and Maryland. The victor might opt for the cash prize of more than $270 million, from which the federal government will take 25% right away, and more later.

This upcoming jackpot just barely surpasses the previous record of $1.5686 billion, which was the grand prize for a Powerball drawing back in 2016.

The Tennessee Education Lottery has raised more than $4.7 billion for specific education programs in Tennessee, including college scholarships and after-school programs, according to lottery officials.

Tickets cost $2 each, and players choose five numbers between one and 70 and an extra number between one and 25. The mega number is 7.
