Diablo Immortal is the mobile Diablo game nobody asked for

This surprise announcement of a mobile game has many Diablo fans furious and confused.

Games publishing giant Blizzard Entertainment has announced Diablo Immortal, a new action role-playing game (RPG) for Android and iOS developed alongside Chinese tech company Netease.

Check out some Diablo Immortal gameplay footage, below. After months and months of rumours, speculation, and a bit of expectation dampening from Blizzard itself, Diablo Immortal was officially announced.

Charles Singletary Jr keeps the updates flowing as the News Editor, breaking stories while investigating the biggest topics in gaming and technology. The game will take place somewhere in the 20-year span between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, and will revisit some of those games' locations.

Blizzard even reiterated these points just two weeks ago, stating that while it knows "what many of you are hoping for, we can only say that 'good things come to those who wait, ' but evil things often take longer". BlizzCon's Diablo Immortal announcement was the last thing most core fans of the franchise wanted.

"It's likely, very possible that future titles across the spectrum will have cross-play", said Diablo's Adam Adham. "We're really thinking about approaching it in many different ways".

The massively multiplayer spin-off will allow over a dozen players to fight together with 6 familiar classes.

Diablo Immortal does not have a release date. The world stone's corruption eventually spread through its many shards until events led to the revival of the demon lord Diablo in the events of "Diablo III".

As far as controls go, Blizzard claims that "the transition from mouse-and-keyboard or controller to mobile touchscreen device was created to feel completely natural, intuitive and fun".

Interested parties can pre-register for special rewards and be among the first to play Diablo Immortal.

And Blizzard stresses that this is a traditional "fully-fledged" Diablo experience, complete with six traditional classes, challenging boss fights and deep gameplay.
