"I did not expect to come to the United States and go to school with kids who were anxious about food as much as I was anxious about it in a refugee camp", Omar said in an interview last month.

This is the first time that Muslim women have been elected to the House.

It was an easy win on Tuesday - her race was uncontested by any candidate from another major party.

A fighter who once heckled US President Donald Trump during a 2016 campaign stop in Detroit, she says she didn't run to make history as Muslim.

Tlaib won Michigan's 13th Congressional District and Omar won Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, replacing the first Muslim member of Congress, Keith Ellison, who Tuesday became the state's attorney general.

Jones lost the Democratic primary for the full term to Tlaib. Along with being one of the first Muslim women in Congress, Omar is the first Somali-American elected to the post.

Tlaib is a 42-year-old Detroit native.

There is also a lot of evidence that she may have married her brother and therefore committed massive immigration fraud, according to PJ Media.

When asked about her political journey in Minnesota, Omar said, "It's a cold place but the people have warm hearts". Was a candidate for District 6 representative on the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

MA will also be getting its first black congresswoman while Arizona and Tennessee stand to elect their first woman senators. "This is someone who has cozied up to white nationalists... we should recognize him as what he is and more the conversation beyond him, beyond this divisiveness and to a place of hope, inclusion", Omar added. Omar, a refugee from Somalia, is the first Somali-American Muslim woman to hold public office.

Omar said President Trump's "politics of fear" motivated her to get in the race.
