On Saturday afternoon Treu's pick-up truck crossed the center line, went into a ditch, and hit a group of girl scouts who were working on a highway beautification project. He is expected to be charged with four counts of homicide.
The community gathered Sunday night to remember four lives taken suddenly in a hit-and-run crash, reports CBS Minnesota.
Jayna Kelley, 9; Autum Helgeson, 10; Haylee Hickle, 10, and her mother, Sara Jo Schneider, 32, were all killed when they were hit by a vehicle while picking up trash along a Wisconsin county highway shortly before noon Saturday, said Lake Hallie police.
The girls were fourth graders at Halmstad Elementary School and Southview Elementary School in nearby Chippewa Falls, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) east of Minneapolis. Treu sped away from the scene, but later turned himself in.
Officials say two area Girl Scouts and one adult are dead.
Teddy bears, balloons and candles sat on two wooden benches in front of Halmstad Elementary School on November 4 while dozens of families met inside with faith leaders and counselors.
"The Lake Hallie Police Department would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families involved", Sokup said in a statement Saturday evening, noting that the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities say another 10-year-old Girl Scout who was injured, but not identified, is hospitalized in stable condition.
Some of the girls sang songs in memory of their friends. But to his credit, the 21-year-old came back later and turned himself in to the police.
A western Wisconsin school district is making counselors available for students following the deaths three Girl Scouts and a parent who were killed in a hit-and-run crash along a rural road.

The two-ton pickup slammed into the Scouts, visiting tragedy on the town of 14,000 before speeding off. The vehicle of interest is believed to be a black or dark grey Ford F-150 '04-'06 with heavy front end damage and missing both side view mirrors.
