Oprah’s mother has passed away

Vernita Lee died in her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Thanksgiving Day at the age of 83.

While Oprah didn't have a great relationship with her mother, she encouraged her fans to love their families during her 2013 LifeClass. On November 26, it was reported that Winfrey's mother Vernita Lee had died.

No other details were given.

After meeting Vernon Winfrey, Vernita welcomed her first child in rural MS at the age of 18.

Oprah eventually went to live with her mother, and although it took a while for them to fix their tumultuous relationship, they became close over the last few years. Lee and a friend who was the NAACP Waukesha branch president sometimes attended tapings of her TV show in Chicago bearing cakes to bribe Winfrey into coming to the dinner.

Vernita Lee is also survived by another daughter, Patricia Amanda Faye Lee, and predeceased by her son Jeffrey Lee, who died in 1989; and daughter Patricia Lee Lloyd, who died in 2003.

Oprah Winfrey's mother has died. She was 83 years old.

Oprah has made no mention of the death on her social media handles.

Private funeral services were held.

Winfrey recalled a favorite story about her mother during a 2003 visit to the city of Pewaukee. I don't know anybody. Sources said that "even though she didn't have the best relationship with Vernita, her passing was really devastating for her".

"When you walk into a room, you never walk alone", Winfrey said during a recent speech.

In 2011 Lee appeared on her daughter's television show with a Milwaukee woman who was put up for adoption by Lee in 1963.
