With the team's struggles in mind, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Dave McMenamin reported that president Magic Johnson "admonished" head coach Luke Walton for the team's slow start to the season.

Following the Lakers' recent two-game road trip, in which they suffered losses to the Spurs and Timberwolves, Magic reportedly held a meeting in which he made it clear that "there are intense and immediate pressures on Walton to deliver the franchise a victor in short order".

Johnson's tone in the meeting was described as "aggressive", and some within the organization say it was consistent with his "volatile management style" and the way he has handled Walton and the coaching staff. Lakers owner Jeanie Buss, who has been outspoken with her support of Walton, was made aware of the tense nature of the meeting.

Although the 3-5 start is far from ideal, one big issue is the team losing close games.

That said, with James in town, the expectations to win are real. Johnson put more pressure on Walton after the winless trip.

And while many will point to the track record of James and coaches getting fired, the same report suggests that James has been supportive of Walton privately as much as publicly. "This is something we do all the time". "We know where we're going, we know how to get there, and it takes time and it takes hard work".

"We need to figure out how we can string together some great games or even good games and bring our win total from where it is now".

"My message to the players was, this is what we talked about", Walton said.

In the preseason, Johnson implored patience for his team and coach. "We know this is going to happen".
