Hegerberg called the award "a huge step for women's football" and also told The Associated Press she feels "very proud" to be the first Ballon d'Or-winning woman.

Immediately after the awards ceremony ended, with outrage already frothing on social media, Solveig still couldn't see why his inappropriate suggestion to the 23-year-old Norwegian was causing such upset.

The Norway global, who plays her club football with Lyon, was invited on stage in Paris to accept her Golden Ball from French DJ Martin Solveig.

She added, "I also want to thank France Football".

"I, of course did not want to offend anyone", Solveig said. It's really sad that it went that way.

Her words echoed Solveig's own message after the internet brouhaha that erupted shortly after Hegerberg's appearance onstage.

"I share this with Olympique Lyonnais, my teammates, the staff", she beamed after joining men's victor Luka Modric and men's best young player Kylian Mbappe on the stage with her trophy.

"Women's football is taking huge strides and questions and comments like this take away from those strides we have taken". When Hegerberg renewed her contract with Lyon until 2021, it was widely rumoured she'd become the highest paid player in the women's game, although her official salary details were not released.

Women in Football described Murray as a '#MaleAlly" when they wrote: "Andy Murray, saying it how it is.

"Let him dance with the queen tonight, I was thinking", she told the AP.

The steely forward is a three-time victor of the Women's Champions League with French club Lyon.

His countryman Kylian Mbappe won the inaugural Kopa Trophy for the best male player aged 21 and under.

The three-time Women's Champions League victor with French side Lyon was named the world's best female player of 2018 at a gala in Paris on Monday. I didn't really consider it a sexual harassment or anything in the moment.

Hegerberg was the top scorer with 15 goals as the French side won the Champions League for the third year running.

The men's award was taken out by Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric, ending a decade of dominance by Modric's former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.

Reacting to being named Footballer of the Year, Modric said: "It is hard to express my emotion and how I feel in words. Wow, men stay disappointing", said TBee. There's a lot of discussions to take and to bring on the table as a woman in 2018.
