No. 4-ranked OU, which behind Murray leads the nation in points per game (49.5), yards per game (577.9) and yards per play (8.7; FBS record is 8.6), will make its 52nd bowl appearance when it takes on No. 1 Alabama in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl on December 29 at 7 p.m. CT. However, the Alabama quarterback received a couple of positive signs Thursday as he beat out fellow Heisman finalist Kyler Murray for both the Walter Camp and Maxwell awards given to college football's player of the year.
Tagovailoa took home the Walter Camp Award as well as the Maxwell Award, both of which honor the nation's top player.
The future pro baseball player was honored with the Davey O'Brien Award on Thursday night at the College Football Awards Show. Murray and Tua will battle it out once again for the Heisman, but Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins remains a dark-horse for the award.
"I think he's been one of the best players in college football all year long", Alabama head coach Nick Saban said last week. That battle, which will rage on this weekend in NY for the Heisman, was won by Kyler Murray.
The Walter Camp victor has won the Heisman the last five seasons. Earlier in the day, Murray was also announced as the AP Player of the Year.
- Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen won the Chuck Bednarik award as the nation's top defensive player. The Oakland Athletics took Murray with the ninth pick in the Major League Baseball draft in June. Kyler Murray transferred to Oklahoma after his freshman season, sat out a season per transfer rules and then backed up Mayfield. Through 13 games, the sophomore has completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 3,353 yards and a school-record 37 touchdowns. Mayfield won the award last season. Tagovailoa also broke Alabama's single-game touchdown records with six (five passing, one rushing) during Alabama's 52-21 victory over Auburn.
