Trump picks General Mark Milley as next top military adviser

Trump chooses new Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, against Mattis wishes

Trump names Army Chief of Staff Mark Milley to be new Joint Chiefs chairman

Trump ignored the rumors as he left the White House, but teased reporters with an important announcement about the future of his Joint Chiefs of Staff. Kelly is a retired four-star General. "Date of transition to be determined".

President Donald Trump said he'll be making an announcement on Saturday concerning the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He says: "I can give you a little hint: It will have to do with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and succession". Several officials confirmed the decision on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced. As we reported right after the midterms, Ayers' backers have been telling the president he has the sharp political instincts to remake the West Wing to better combat the hazards ahead. Dunford, a former commandant of the Marine Corps and commander of coalition troops in Afghanistan, is expected to serve out his term as Joint Chiefs chairman, which ends October 1.

Sources told Fox News on Friday that Dunford has no plans to end his term as chairman early. But a change was made in 2016 because Congress wanted continuity before and after a presidential election.

Under the law, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the highest-ranking and senior-most military officer in the U.S. Armed Forces and is the principal military advisor to the president. Trump re-nominated him in 2017 for a second term. He has served in command and leadership positions, including in Afghanistan and Iraq.
