Freddie Kitchens is poised to be hired by the Cleveland Browns as their permanent head coach, while the Denver Broncos are set to turn to Vic Fangio. However, Bowles has not signed a contract yet and was not officially announced to the job in Tampa, meaning he still could accept the role in Chicago. But Fangio remained in Chicago, where his impressive overhaul of the Bears defense has now led him to his first National Football League head coaching job.

They fired Vance Joseph after he posted 5-11 and 6-10 records in his two seasons at the helm, making it the first time in 46 years the Broncos have had back-to-back losing years.

Munchak just completed his fifth season with the Steelers after having spent the previous 31 years with the Houston Oilers/Titans franchise, first as a player and then as a coach.

Fangio has turned Bears" defense into a ferocious unit, one that has echoed the legendary "85 Bears squad. While the personnel comes back, they can not miss a beat next year if they want to get back to the same level.

Elway didn't believe that innovation required a young up-and-comer, however.

Denver is done with its head coach search.

Fangio became a popular head coaching candidate after consistently fielding stellar defenses over the greater part of the past decade.

Fangio comes to the Broncos from the Chicago Bears, where he was defensive coordinator since 2015. The personnel were largely the same but Hall of Fame defensive lineman Dan Hampton explained the mindset change as going from being attack dogs under Ryan to being guard dogs under the bend-but don't-break Tobin.

Fangio was also defensive coordinator at Stanford in 2010.

"He's an evil genius", Mack told NFL.com in November. I want the guys that understand the game, they understand Xs and Os but also have the ability to lead men.

Broncos star linebacker Von Miller suggested last month that the Bears' defense could lead Chicago to the Super Bowl title much as Denver's defense had three years ago - even in an age of potent offenses capitalizing on ever friendlier rules to run up scores. "I feel like the Bears definitely got a defense that can go all the way".
