Amid a national conversation and controversy surrounding USA politicians pictured in blackface, "The View" co-host Joy Behar has been silent about a photo of herself now sweeping social media.

Political pundit and Fox News host Laura Ingraham defended The View co-host Joy Behar, encouraging media and the public to treat Behar fairly over images that surfaced appearing to show her with a darkened face and afro-like hair.

"Joy, are you black?" co-host Raven-Symoné asks.

"I had makeup that was a little bit darker than my skin", Behar, now 76, replied.

The View co-host Joy Behar is now the latest celebrity to spark outrage over a reported case of blackface.

"She is just an Italian woman, with naturally curly hair in an old photo".

"You mean blackface?" Symoné responded.

She added, "I was 29". Raven-Symoné - who is black - continues her gentle ribbing of Behar, asking, "Are you my auntie, Joy?" and "Did you have tanning lotion on, Joy?"

Gov. Ralph Northam apologized after a photo featuring a man in blackface and another dressed in KKK robes from his medical school yearbook page emerged last week. "That's my actual hair, though". But he confessed that on a separate occasion, he dressed as singer Michael Jackson.

This week, Virginia's governor and attorney general are being criticized for their use of blackface. The Democratic leader later said he was not in the photo and hadn't seen it before.

In October, Today show personality Megyn Kelly was axed by NBC after she defended people wearing blackface on a segment about Halloween. "I thought, like, who doesn't love Diana Ross?" said Kelly.

Many commented that Behar will "get a pass" because she's a liberal.

The audience and fellow co-hosts were demonstrably taken aback at how drastically different Behar looked, some of them giggling.
