Santi Solari has lost the support of the Real Madrid hierarchy and will be sacked as manager when the club settle on a replacement, sources have told ESPN FC.
That ended Madrid's dominance of the competition that had seen them win the last three titles in a row, while they had also suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Barcelona just three days before - a result that leaves them 12 points off their rivals at the league's summit.
That followed the ignominy of consecutive defeat to bitter rivals Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-finals and La Liga that means Madrid are nearly certain to miss out winning a domestic or European trophy for the first time since 2015.
Solari took charge of Real on a temporary basis at the end of October when Julen Lopetegui was sacked and was then handed a contract until 2021. It's an honour to serve this club. The objective is always the next game, always.
Solari was around 80 minutes late to his news conference, prompting some to speculate that he had held a discussion with senior players amid talk of an argument between captain Sergio Ramos and president Florentino Perez.
"Disciplinary issues are handled internally", Solari said.
"I am the coach and tomorrow, our obligation, mine in particular, is to go there and do the best we can", Solari said.
When asked about Zidane and Mourinho, the Barca head coach told reporters: "They're good coaches and I have no doubt about that, as they've demonstrated it". You can keep doing your job, I will keep doing mine.
Solari's future at Real Madrid is hanging in the balance following a torrid week and an overall underwhelming stint at the club.
Real Madrid will try to pick up the pieces after one of the toughest weeks in the club's history when they visit Valladolid on Sunday night.
