Chiefs signing S Tyrann Mathieu to 3-year deal

The safety formerly known as "The Honey Badger" is getting a 3-year deal from the Kansas City Chiefs that is said to be worth $42 million.

The safety market exploded after strong safety Landon Collins signed with the Washington Redskins for a 6-year deal for $84 million with $45 million guaranteed.

Teams can officially sign free agents when the new league year begins March 13.

Safety Tyrann Mathieu intends to sign a three-year, $42m deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to multiple reports Monday. He also pairs with Eric Berry who, if healthy, would give Kansas City the best safety tandem on paper since the height of the Legion of Boom Seahawks back in the early 2010s.

Mathieu, 26, spent last season with the Houston Texans and his first five years with the Arizona Cardinals, making a Pro Bowl in 2015. He played his first five seasons with the Cardinals before moving on to Houston past year. Mathieu will enter the 2019 season as one of only two players with 10-plus interceptions, seven-plus sacks, 10-plus quarterback hits and a whopping 40-plus passes defended since 2013 (Luke Kuechly is the other only player to accomplish the feat).
