The daughters of "Full House" actress Lori Loughlin became targets of scorn on social media on Tuesday after their mother was charged in an alleged scheme to help privileged Americans get their children into elite universities by fraudulent means.
On Wednesday, University of Southern California spokesperson Gary Polakovic told CNN that all applicants connected to the bribery scheme will be denied admission.
Gordon Caplan, who prosecutors said paid $US75,000 previous year to have some of his daughter's wrong answers corrected on a college entrance exam, was placed on leave from his post as co-chairman of the global law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher, the company said on Wednesday. They were among 50 individuals indicted Tuesday for conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. "U didn't even have to go to college, u can afford not to".
Singer arranged for a third-party - usually Mark Riddell - to take the test secretly in the students' place or replace their responses with his own.
Court documents stated that Loughlin and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, "agreed to pay bribes totaling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team-despite the fact that they did not participate in crew-thereby facilitating their admission to USC".
"I'd like to maybe sit with you after your session with the girls as I have some concerns and want to fully understand the game plan and make sure we have a roadmap for success as it related to [our daughter] and getting her into a school other than ASU [Arizona State University]!". Later a $200,000 payment was sent to the Key Worldwide Foundation, a non-profit organization.
It was just back in August when 19-year-old Olivia announced her plans to attend college to her almost 2 million YouTube subscribers, where she was criticised for seeming "spoiled" after saying, "I don't know how much of school I'm gonna attend".
"These students are now taking a spot from a student that actually did work very, very hard", one said. At the meeting, the subcommittee approved her conditional admission to the university.
The University of Texas at Austin said men's tennis coach Michael Center was placed on leave "as soon as we learned of the charges against him, which are being fully investigated".
Coaches from top universities including Yale, Stanford, Georgetown and USC were also implicated.
Loughlin and Giannulli were charged on Tuesday, as well as more than 40 other people. "I don't really care about school, as you guys all know".
It's also not clear whether any of the students in this scandal will face charges.
