Tiger Woods reacts as he wins the Masters golf tournament.

Spoke to @TigerWoods to congratulate him on the great victory he had in yesterday's @TheMasters, & to inform him that because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM!

On Monday, President Trump tweeted that he would bestow Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the highest awards a civilian can receive in the United States. George H.W. Bush presented the medals to Nicklaus and Palmer; Barack Obama to Sifford.

Woods' victory marked his first Masters victory in 14 years, after a series of back problems and personal problems threatened to end his career.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded by the US President "for especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, or world peace, or cultural or other significant public or private endeavors". He watched the Masters from his Virginia golf club on Sunday.

Trump appeared to follow the action at this year's Masters closely, tweeting well-wishes to the field on Saturday and encouraging people to tune in when Woods had the lead with just two holes left to play on Sunday.

So far, Trump has honoured three athletes with medals of freedom: Babe Ruth, Roger Staubach and Alan Page.
