A Fordham University journalism student just weeks from graduation died after falling from the iconic campus clock tower, apparently while trying to take a picture. "Fordham will confer a bachelor's degree upon Sydney posthumously, which we will present to her parents at the appropriate time", McShane continued.
Her family rushed to her side, along with two priests, one from the Catholic university, however she sadly died on Sunday evening. However, according to the Post, the president of Fordham confirmed her death.
According to the university, Monfries had climbed the clock tower with some friends.
Monfries and a group of friends climbed the tower at roughly 3 a.m.
Students told the campus newspaper that it has become a "rite of passage" to climb the interior of the tower, touch the bell and snap some photos before graduation. The door to the tower is always locked, and only authorized staff can access the tower, the university said.
Monfries, who was from Portland, Ore., was a senior at Rose Hill due to graduate in May. "They're heartbroken. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to witness", the unnamed pal told ABC-TV.
"They're unlocked at night when they're cleaning", the student claimed. The student, a senior, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, and the student's family was notified.
Some students said climbing the tower is a campus tradition, while others said some climb for the view.
