The UK has committed to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and will become the first G7 country to legislate the proposal.
The motion calls for the city to upgrade its greenhouse-gas emissions targets to those outlined in the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, which states that the world has about 12 years left to try to avoid climate catastrophe due to rising greenhouse-gas emissions.

Britain hopes its decision will encourage other governments to adopt more ambitious climate targets and said that a further assessment would take place within five years to discern the extent to which other countries are taking similar action.
Britain's independent climate advisers, the Committee on Climate Change, recommended last month that the country move to the new target, which implies sweeping changes in energy, transport and agriculture.
"Delivering this ambitious new target for a new generation of mobility systems presents big challenges to every player in the transport arena; automotive, energy, government, fleets and, of course, consumers... but together we can - and must - develop, communicate and deliver the plan to get us to Net Zero". The government's committee on climate change says the change will help public health by reducing air and noise pollution and also help biodiversity. The Campaign for Better Transport has also said that government transport policy must rapidly change to meet the net zero target. Yet how this can actually be achieved remains the elephant in the room.
However, if this turns out not to be the case, the United Kingdom will legally be allowed to revoke its net-zero legislation and revert to the Climate Change Act's original target. The government has not yet moved formally to include global aviation and shipping within the target, but they have acknowledged that these sectors must be part of the whole economy strategy for net zero.

The announcement has been welcomed by businesses and academics and others across British society. "Governments and policymakers will need to work closely with industry to ensure emissions are not simply exported elsewhere whilst domestic manufacturing is rendered uncompetitive". "Using worldwide credits within an appropriate monitoring, reporting and verification framework is the right thing to do for the planet, allowing the U.K.to maximise the value of each pound spent on climate change mitigation", the government statement said.
Today will also see May officially launch the UK's bid to host the COP 26 climate conference in London in December 2020.
