Atletico Madrid challenges Antoine Griezmann's Barcelona transfer

Antoine Griezmann

Why Barcelona’s pursuit of forward is about to get messy

The club, which made the announcement on Friday, said the 28-year-old will sign a contract for the next five seasons through June 2024, and his contract will have a buyout of €800 million, which is almost $900 million, making him pretty much untouchable.

Last season he even starred in a 45-minute documentary produced by a company owned by Barcelona defender Gerard Pique called "The Decision", which ended with Griezmann turning down an offer to move to Barcelona and opting to stay at Atletico.

Atletico believe Griezmann had agreed to join Barcelona before the release clause in his contract was reduced to €120m and are claiming the amount deposited to complete the deal on Friday is €80m short of what they are due.

'It was also prior to the date on which the clause was modified the communication that the player made on 14 May announcing his disassociation from the club'.

Atletico condemned Barca for approaching Griezmann while the La Liga title was still being contended between the two teams and demanded the player return to the club for training.

Barcelona, which won La Liga last season by nine points, has strengthened itself at the expense of second-placed Atletico Madrid by signing its leading scorer in each of the last five campaigns.

"As a child, my father showed me that the same train doesn't pass by only once". Finally, our paths cross.

"I'll defend the Barca colours with all my determination and commitment".

Even without signing anyone else this summer Barca could end up spending even more money, with Atleti not happy with the Griezmann deal. Barcelona made Griezmann's signing official and the terms of the agreement came to light, among which the new buyout clause stands out.
