Biden will also push back against criticism against his time in the Senate by noting his service as vice president to President Obama, who remains very popular in the Democratic Party and among black Democratic voters in particular.

Politico noted that Harris served as attorney general in California during the same time Biden's son, Beau, was attorney general of Delaware.

"I'm going to let my record stand for itself and not be distorted or scared", Biden said. I'm happy to debate that issue and all those issues with my friends because guess what, look who won the races.

Barack Obama felt so strongly about Biden that he chose him to be vice president, and even awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Harris must realize that her chances to be the presidential nominee are iffy at best. I've been involved in civil rights my whole career.

"We have to act swiftly", Harris said. I don't think he's a racist, personally.

"I was prepared for them to come after me, but I wasn't prepared for the person coming at me the way she came at me", Biden told CNN host Chris Cuomo on Thursday, adding that he was surprised given his family's longstanding friendship with Harris.

"Growing up here in SC, that's meaningful to us", she said.

In perhaps the most tense moment during the first round of Democratic debates last week, Harris confronted the former vice president over his support for a policy which allowed states to oppose busing, invoking her own experience as a child dealing with segregation.

"Every child out there is capable, but they're living in circumstances that make it hard", he said. The implication, though Biden never really finishes the point, seems to be that this was someone Biden couldn't have expected would ever do this to him.

Biden, who has decadeslong political relationships in the South, was beginning a three-stop swing in SC on Saturday, with scheduled visits to Sumter, Orangeburg and Charleston.

The South Carolina primary is more than seven months away but Biden and Harris appear destined for a showdown there, their campaigns banking on the backing of black voters. "They don't want to talk much about my time as vice president", Biden said Saturday in SC. What I do know, and it's the good news and the bad news: "the American people think they know me, and they know me".

"I'm looking forward to this, man", Biden said.

Harris' latest total is about equal to what she brought in during the first fundraising quarter, but noticeably less than some other first-tier 2020 White House hopefuls, who have already released details of their fundraising ahead of the July 15 deadline to report to the Federal Election Commission.

It's completely understandable that Biden would want this campaign to be about the future rather than each candidate's paper trail.

"My view on it is that Joe Biden has had his day", said Willis.
