Box Office Report: "Spider-Man: Far From Home" Keeps Summer Afloat

To help whet the appetites of Marvel fans-and to approach the record $2.79 billion gross of Avatar-Disney re-released Endgame in theaters the weekend ahead of Far From Home.

The web-slinging adventurer easily dominated ticket sales over the weekend, delivering a US$185 million debut from 4,636 venues from its first six days in theatres.

The trippy visual effects that promise to stun you in the second half connect not to the first film but to "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" - a huge complement since that one was animated. Homecoming and Far From Home are distributed by Sony Pictures. The character also played a prominent role in a recent Amazing Spider-Man story called "Hunted", where he gathered together dozens of animal-themed supervillains for the wealthy elite of the Marvel Universe to hunt.

Its storyline follows up on blockbuster Avengers: Endgame to focus on how Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) confront a world without Iron Man.

Vincent D'Onofrio would be interested although he considers it surprising, but another star of the small screen would also like to enter the film franchise. Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau and Marisa Tomei all returned for the sequel. A24 nevertheless hailed the results for Midsommar, saying "it firmly cements Aster as one of the most exciting new directors to come around in a long while". The R-rated folk horror film nabbed sixth place on box office charts, generating US$6 million over the weekend and US$10.9 million in its first five days of release. The movie, about a group of friends who travel to Sweden for a festival, has a mediocre C+ CinemaScore.

"In the wake of "Far From Home's" massive global opening week over-performance. the film is now riding a wave of momentum that should carry it through to the rarefied air of the $1 billion club", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore.

In fifth was Disney's live-action remake of "Aladdin", taking in $7.5 million in its seventh week out.
