Tropical storm Dorian heads toward Windward islands

When Florida may need to be ready for a hurricane

Tropical Storm Dorian Strengthens As It Barrels Toward Puerto Rico and Potentially Florida

Publicist Amal Mokhtar says that due to the weather forecast, a concert scheduled for Saturday in Miami Gardens will instead happen Friday night.

"Dorian could be near hurricane strength when it passes through the northern Windward Islands on Tuesday, and it is expected to be a hurricane when it moves near Puerto Rico and eastern Hispaniola", the Miami-based NHC said in a statement.

The Salvation Army and Red Cross said they are always ready and prepared for a natural disaster. Top winds remained at 50 miles per hour while the storm continued on a northwesterly track at 13 miles per hour.

The newest update shows the storm trending further south making landfall near Cape Canaveral as a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 115 miles per hour.

The official long-range forecast path still shows Dorian approaching the east coast of Florida as a hurricane. "Hurricane force sustained winds would be carried across the entire width of the state if the current forecast holds", said FOX 35 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Richards.

As of the early hours of Wednesday, Dorian had sustained winds of 60 mph.

"A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations hard or unsafe".

Puerto Rico declared a state of emergency late Monday as forecasters warn Dorian could strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane as it gains strength in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Virgin Islands are also advised to monitor Dorian and keep abreast of any storm watches that may be required.

Dorian is forecast to be near hurricane strength when it approaches the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Georgia and the Carolinas should expect heavy rain and winds associated with Hurricane Dorian over the weekend and into Monday.

In 2017, Hurricane Maria left 3,000 dead and caused $90 billion in damage on Puerto Rico, devastating the island.

Puerto Rico is now under a hurricane watch because of Tropical Storm Dorian, meaning the island could see risky conditions within 24 hours.

The government of the Dominican Republic issued a tropical storm warning from Isla Saona to Samana, the NHC said.
