There has been one death, in IL.
So far, no deaths have been reported.
Counties with confirmed cases include Dodge, Door, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Portage, Racine, Walworth, Washington, Waukesha and Winnebago. "We strongly urge people not to vape".
Proponents have touted e-cigarettes as healthier, safer alternatives to traditional tobacco products.
"The inhalation of harmful chemicals found in e-cigarettes can cause irreversible lung damage and lung disease. Thankfully, they have all responded well to high-dose steroids".
The release says all of the patients have reported vaping in the weeks to months prior to their illness. In more severe cases, patients needed to be hooked up to mechanical ventilators due to breathing difficulties. "At this point, neither the treating physicians in these cases nor the Departments of Public Health have ascertained which products and substances are being used".
Survey participants, notes Reuters, were asked how often they breathed smoke from someone using combustible tobacco products, as well as how often they breathed vapor from somebody using e-cigarettes. "I don't know, if people are getting sick on that", said Quick.
"What that means for downstream health, we still don't know". On a similar note, CDC has also declared that the organization is looking into a rise of severe lung-disease cases associated with vaping.
But they stressed that a clear-cut common cause of the illnesses hadn't been identified and that they were being classified as "potential cases still under investigation".
Rose notes that epidemiologists will seek to determine whether there is a contaminant, or one bad product in particular. The country also has a couple of uniquely risky local tobacco products, including leaf-wrapped cigarettes known as bidis - probably the only form of tobacco more harmful than a normal cigarette - and several varieties of chewing tobacco "enhanced" with quicklime.
"People will put nearly anything into those cigarettes", he says. Some media outlets are reporting that the illness may be caused by high-concentrate exposure to THC, but that has not been substantiated in any way and appears to be entirely incorrect. That some people responded to steroids implies that inflammation is involved. Tens of millions of people around the world vape, and some of them have now been doing it for close to 15 years.
As the wait continues for robust scientific research regarding the safety of these devices, and as more and more health issues result from vaping, Chapman says we must support the CDC, the FDA and local health departments' investigations "as urgently as we can".
Juul said it is monitoring these reports, commenting on how these cases of lung illness reaffirm the need to keep all tobacco and nicotine products away from youth. "Unregulated illicit market cannabis products, like products in any unregulated marketplace, are of variable quality and may put some consumers at risk", said Paul Armentano, NORML's deputy director.
