Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews comments on the alleged May incident in his hometown of Scottsdale, Ariz.
He signed a five-year contract extension in February worth $58 million.
"It's not something that I think any of us really wish we were talking about today". "We received the complaint, got with [our] legal [team], tried to map out a plan on how to handle the situation and that was just an error in judgment on my part [not to tell the Leafs]". Matthews said. "I regret any of my actions that would ever put a distraction on the team or distress any individual".
Matthews is entering his fourth season with the Maple Leafs. "Unfortunately due to the situation, I'm afraid I can't really make any other comments".
Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas addressed the media after Wednesday night's game and admitted that he only found out about the incident when it went viral on Twitter on Tuesday. It's unclear if anyone in the organization knew about the charge before this week.
"Both are disappointing", Dubas said.
"It can be tough", Rielly said.
"It's tough", he said.
A pre-trial conference is set for Wednesday. A continuance was later issued and the next court date is set for October 22.
National Hockey League deputy commissioner Bill Daly declined a request via email for comment when asked about the allegation.
The court website lists the lawyer for Matthews as Larry Kazan, whose website includes a number of past high-profile clients such as Glen Campbell, Stephon Marbury, David Boston, Jason Kidd, Nikki Sixx, Terrell Suggs, Jason Richardson and Charles Barkley. She said Matthews attempted to open the locked vehicle and sit inside because he thought it would be amusing.
The charge is connected to an incident that allegedly occurred around 2 a.m. on May 26 when Matthews and a group of friends allegedly attempted to open the door to a female security guard's parked and locked vehicle.
The police report states that the female security guard heard what sounded like her auto door attempting to be opened.
None of the allegations have been proven in court. Matthews was not arrested.
Perhaps they go without one again and spread the alternate captaincy between incumbents Tavares, Rielly and, short term, Jake Muzzin or ex-Ottawa captain Jason Spezza. "We have a close family inside, we're going to look after Auston and we're going to look after our actions". "I'm here to help them become better men, better people, better players". He scored 36 goals in 68 games last season.
"You just try not to read about it", said the blue-liner. This doesn't change things with his teammates.
"He had no response after they sent him footage", Dozithee said.
"I don't think it's going to be (a side show)", Babcock insisted. "He's been a leader since Day 1 when he walked in this room". "We're going to support him".
