US President Donald Trump ended the negotiations as they were reported to be on the verge of a conclusion citing Taliban attacks that killed US military personnel.

In an opinion piece written for The Wall Street Journal, Graham said the U.S. shouldn't "outsource" to the Taliban the responsibility to protect America from Islamic State, which carried out the August 17 bombing of a wedding hall in western Kabul that killed 80 people. The only surprise was that things had come as far as a possible Camp David meeting being contemplated.

The permanent representative also appeared to back Trump's claim that the objective of the attack earlier this month was to prepare a better negotiating position. In turn, the Taliban vowed to continue fighting against American forces in Afghanistan after the United States president withdrew from peace talks.

After nine rounds of negotiations in Doha, it seemed that most of the differences between the United States and the Taliban had been resolved.

This brings us to the second aspect of India's interests in the cancellation of these talks. I don't want anything to do with them.

Trump announced on Twitter Saturday that he'd been about to meet leaders of the Taliban - who harbored Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan - on Sunday at his Camp David presidential retreat. A USA -led invasion of Afghanistan shortly after the 2001 attack toppled the Taliban, who had harbored Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader and attacks mastermind. "The support and safe havens enjoyed from beyond Afghanistan's borders by groups such as the Taliban, the Haqqani Network, Daesh [Islamic State], as well as Al Qaeda and its proscribed affiliates, including the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, must be addressed", he said. It is essential to stop the fighting and to decouple it from the negotiations for a political solution.

That claim was backed up by sources CBS News contacted at Resolute Support, the USA -led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission in Afghanistan.

About 14,000 USA troops serve in Afghanistan.

He said any process should have full consent of the Afghan government and its people.

The top Democrats vying for the nod to challenge President Trump in 2020 also have called for the removal of US troops, though they have offered different timetables and parameters for any such withdrawal.

Peace negotiation in Afghanistan should not leave ungoverned spaces that could become breeding ground for terrorists and sponsors of terrorism, India said on Thursday.

It came after months of painstaking, mostly behind-the-scenes negotiations on cutting back the U.S. troop presence and extricating the United States from a long, fruitless war.
