About 2,500 people are feared missing in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian, raising concerns the death toll may significantly rise beyond the 50 reported so far.

Despite the despair, Cartwright said seeing the work of locals and worldwide organizations makes him hopeful that they can rebuild.

Some 15,000 people are still in need of shelter or food, according to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency.

His cousins were feared missing in the immediate aftermath of Dorian, and he learnt of each death as officials discovered them.

"It was awful to see it (the storm) and not hear from my son", said Ryan's mom Janice Cartwright, who lives in Windsor.

While the category 5 storm made landfall on Great Abaco Island, decimating that northern island as well as Grand Bahama, numerous more southern islands remain intact and welcome tourism dollars.

He said flood waters would have carried the bodies of his cousins as they were found nearly a mile away from where they stayed. They loved going on the beach, loved going on the boat for fishing.

"The Pentagon's response included designating 20 Army and Navy helicopters to fly equipment and people from Homestead Air Reserve Base in southern Florida and reopening airfields".
