U.S. News and World Report's college rankings are out - and are the hobgoblins of academic worth.
To be considered one of the best national universities for veterans, schools had to be ranked in the top half of the National Universities category of the 2020 Best Colleges edition. For the third consecutive year, UF appears in the top-10 rankings of national public universities.
To rank colleges, U.S. News & World Report grouped schools into categories based on academic missions, then scored the schools based on outcomes (graduation, retention and social mobility), faculty resources (class size, faculty salary), expert opinion (peer assessments), financial resources and student excellence, according to its explanation of methodology.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was ranked the Top Public School among Regional Universities in the West and 4th overall Best Regional University in the West, following Trinity University in Texas, the University of Portland in OR, and Whitworth University in Washington. This year's jump is the greatest single-year increase in the school's history.
"From national universities and liberal arts colleges to A-Plus Schools for B Students, find the right one for you", the introduction to the searchable report boasts.
The University of Massachusetts Amherst also rose on the list this year, tying with UConn, the University of Maryland, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, among others, for 64th (UMass last year was ranked 70th).
The College of Staten Island, Willowbrook, ranked between the 129th and 170th range of regional universities in the northeastern United States.
"We haven't had a lot of national attention until recent years, and it's really gratifying as provost to know that other universities recognize the quality of educational opportunities we have at Florida State", McRorie said.
The University shares that spot with five peer institutions, two of them-Brandeis and Northeastern-also in MA.
"University of Iowa uses those institutions ... in order to benchmark our performance in nearly everything we do", he said. University of California, Irvine 10.
Florida State also rose one spot to No. 7 in the undergraduate alumni giving metric. In recent years that has prompted more attention to be placed on alternative evaluations such as those by Washington Monthly, which ranks colleges and universities on their contributions to social mobility, research and public service. It ranked No. 211 in the general category among all universities and No. 101 among public universities. In 2019, Columbia tied for third with MIT, Yale, and the University of Chicago, the latter of which is now ranked sixth.
