Variety earlier Friday reported news of Forster's death and said he died in Los Angeles of brain cancer. He recently featured in an action crime drama film which hit screens in the USA on Friday (12th October).
After starting out his career with roles in such movies as Reflections in a Golden Eye (opposite Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando) and Medium Cool, Forster headlined a pair of short-lived TV series, NBC's Banyon and then ABC's Nakia.
RIP Robert Forster! A truly class act/ Actor!
Condolences poured in Friday night on social media.
Forster played Tim Allen's father in Last Man Standing, a rare comedy appearance, and played the father of a comatose mom in Alexander Payne's The Descendants, which was nominated for ensemble acting prizes by SAG and the Gotham awards.
Our thoughts are with Robert's family and friends during this hard time.
But it was Quentin Tarantino's 1997 film "Jackie Brown" that put him back on the map. Thank you for loving me. He has two more projects scheduled to be released this year, Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories and Werewolf.
Forster is survived by his children: Bobby, Elizabeth, Kate and Maeghen; his grandchildren: Tess, Liam, Jack and Olivia; and partner, Denise Grayson.
In an interview with Fandor past year, Forster recalled that when presented with the script for "Jackie Brown", he told Tarantino, "I'm sure they're not going to let you hire me".
"Robert Forster wasn't only one of the best people I've ever known in the industry, he was one of the best people I've known anywhere", James Gunn wrote on Instagram, detailing Forster's long history of giving advice to others in the industry.
