There was an acknowledgement that both India and China were "very complex and very diverse countries", and that both will work together so that radicalization and terrorism does not affect their multicultural, multiethnic and multireligious societies, Gokhale said.

During Xi's trip from hotel to Mahabalipuram in the state of Tamil Nadu, people from all walks of life, including young students, lined the streets waving Chinese and Indian national flags, with young men and women in Indian traditional costumes singing and dancing, to welcome the Chinese president for his visit.

During official discussions, Xi said he and Modi had candid and "heart-to-heart" conversations like friends.

Mr. Gokhale categorically said the Kashmir question has never been raised in the meeting because it is India's internal matter. During talks, China might have urged India to take an independent decision on telecom equipment maker Huawei's bid for India's proposed 3G network and not be swayed by United States pressure.

The two countries should and can embark on a broad road of friendly cooperation, he said, adding that they should correctly view their differences, and never let the differences dim the overall situation of bilateral cooperation.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday that relations between their countries have attained stability and momentum in the past year, something that should enable them to manage their differences and avoid disputes.

During his speech on Independence Day this year, Modi had announced a campaign to make the country free of single-use plastic. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan for a clean India, launched in 2014, has been his pet programme.

Xi arrived in India two days after hosting Pakistani Prime Minister Khan in Beijing.

The two leaders agreed that China and India should respect and learn from each other so as to jointly achieve common development and prosperity, as well as the great rejuvenation of the two civilizations.

"Both leaders agreed that the reformed dialogue structure after the Wuhan summit has significantly improved communications between both countries".

In 2017, the Indian and Chinese armies faced each other down for more than two months on a high altitude border plateau claimed by China and India's tiny Himalayan ally Bhutan.

Modi took Xi on a personal tour of temple monuments dating back to the seventh and eighth century at Mamallapuram in southern India when regional leaders had trade ties with Chinese provinces.

The president said they will instruct relevant departments of both sides to implement the results of the meeting so as to open up new prospects of China-India cooperation.

Mr. Modi and Mr. Xi also agreed to explore the possibility of forming a "manufacturing partnership" through the proposed mechanism.

Recently, at the World Economic Forum, Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal stated: "Huawei over the last 10 or 12 years has become extremely good with their product, to a point where I can safely say today their product is significantly superior to Ericsson and Nokia".

Gokhale said that President Jinping also welcomed investment from India to China in sectors like information technology and pharmaceuticals.
