According to the Ohio State University, Young will be sitting out the game due to a "possible NCAA issue from 2018 that the Department of Athletics is looking into". He had four sacks and five tackles for loss in a 38-7 victory over Wisconsin on October 26, and is one half-sack away from tying Vernon Gholston's school record of 14 set in 2007.
First reported by Austin Ward of Letterman Row, Ohio State edge rusher and top 2020 NFL Draft prospect Chase Young is facing a suspension. He said that he paid the loan back and is working with officials to get back onto the field.
So why would Ohio State sit Chase Young against Maryland?
The third-ranked Buckeyes were No. 1 in this week's initial College Football Playoff rankings.
"Unfortunately, I won't be playing this week because of an NCAA eligibility issue", Young explained on Twitter. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. ranked Young as the No. 1 player available for the 2020 National Football League draft on his latest Big Board. The defensive end has been dominant on the Buckeyes' defense this season with 13.5 sacks - a tie for the second-most sacks in a season for the Buckeyes.
In the NCAA, he gets only the value of his Ohio State scholarship, and he gets to have the NCAA scrutinize his private life for any sign that he might have made any money anywhere else. The Buckeyes should still have no issues here as Maryland has really struggled in Big Ten play, posting a record of just 1-5 and the lone win was against Rutgers.
