The parade kicked off Thursday morning with a performance by the Broadway cast of "Ain't Too Proud - The Life and Times of the Temptations".
A video shows the giant balloon * a href="https://newswire.storyful.com/storylines/*/stories/228529" target="_blank" rel="Follow" *dropping to the street as handlers try to control it in high winds, then striking and knocking down a marcher trying to help, Storyfull reported.
Astronaut Snoopy, a new version of a long-time parade favourite, was among the giant inflated characters leading the line-up.
"The decision on adding the balloons to the lineup is made by NYPD and Macy's officials just prior to the start of the parade and takes into account the weather data along the entire parade route and information from nearby weather stations", he said. If winds pick up, the balloons may still be grounded.
The Macy's parade balloons might have been lowered, but Susan Koteen's spirits weren't. Blustery weather had threatened to ground the balloons, a crowd favorite not permitted to fly in strong winds.
Among the performers scheduled for this year are singers Celine Dion, Ciara, Kelly Rowland and Idina Menzel.
City regulations that were put in place after a Cat in the Hat balloon knocked down a lamp post in 1997, injuring four spectators, say the inflatable characters must be kept out of the sky sustained winds top 23 miles per hour (37 km per hour), and gusts exceed 34 mph (54 kph).
It's that time of year, when celebrities gather around for a morning of fun.
