Tepper will begin a search for a new coach immediately.

The Panthers owner indicated that those types of coaches tend to have an offensive background, unlike Rivera's defensive background.

It wasn't a shocking move, as many expected Rivera to be fired once the season was over but the timing of it did seem a little odd as they could have just let things play out over the next four weeks before letting him go.

Rivera was hired in 2011 and was 76-63-1 in the regular season and a 3-4 postseason mark.

Tepper said the team will hire an assistant general manager and vice president of football operations.

"Marty Hurney happens to be an excellent evaluator of college talent". While he certainly doesn't have the same length of resume of numerous other possible options for the role, there are a number of things on his short resume that will appeal. I wish him the best. Shortly after news of Rivera's firing broke, Cam Newton, the Panthers' starting quarterback for each of Rivera's nine seasons with the organization, reacted to the news via his Instagram account.

McDermott ended up earning the Bills job shortly after that run and has since built a similarly strong defense while working with a well-respected defensive coordinator in Leslie Frazier.

Plenty of teams will rightfully be expressing heavy interest in Rivera now that his services will be available for 2020, one of which needs to be Philadelphia. Since Week 8, the Panthers' defense is 32nd in rushing touchdowns allowed (15) and yards per attempt (5.85). Quarterbacks coach Scott Turner, Norv's son, becomes offensive coordinator. The younger Turner will have four games to showcase his playcalling ability. The 57-year old was a linebacker in the National Football League for nine years in Chicago (1984-92), including playing on the legendary 1985 Bears defense.

There are two slight caveats to all of this, however, with the most obvious of which being that because Riley is such hot property, he is in a position where he doesn't really need to take a job even if he's offered it and has said in the past he's not interested in coaching in the NFL.
