Boeing’s Starliner returns to Earth after glitch prevents space station rendezvous

Boeing announced the resignation of CEO Dennis Muilenburg today (Dec. 23), one day after Starliner capped its truncated debut flight with a picture-perfect landing at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

According to Steve Stich, deputy manager for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's commercial crew program, the mission could have been a success with humans on board. The capsule also demonstrated the capability of its airbags and parachutes during the landing.

'We pinpoint landed it, ' Nasa Administrator Jim Bridenstine acknowledged at a submit-landing briefing.

"We did not make it to the International Space Station". We did not dock.

A Boeing senior vice-president Jim Chilton said on behalf of the company's employees who he visited at the manufacturing plant at the Kennedy Space Center before attending a press conference on the accident, 'These are passionate people who are committing a big chunk of their lives to put Americans back in space from our soil, so it's disappointing for us'.

The Starliner is set to lift off this Friday, on an Atlas rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 6:36 a.m. EST.

The space station orbits at an altitude of about 400 kilometers (250 miles) above sea level.

Still, NASA reported that Boeing was able to complete a number of test objectives including the successful launch of the first human-rated United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket and the completion of a positive command uplink between the International Space Station and Starliner.

"This is why we conduct these tests, to learn and improve our systems", NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement. "We had a little issue with the timer in the beginning".

Starliner's first crewed flight had already been scheduled for early 2020. It's planning to launch a crewed flight with astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley in July, if schedules hold.

The business is reeling from two deadly crashes of its 737 Max airliner.

Boeing intends to suspend creation of the airplane in January. Its thermal shield will have to resist the intense heat created by friction with the atmosphere, and its three parachutes will have to deploy correctly.

NASA stated the Starliner had landed in exemplary problem and would today be refurbished in front of a choice on whether or not to complete another test trip or even trust that the auto ended up being safe to transport astronauts.

At the invitation of Boeing, Ms. Williams said she would like to name the spacecraft Calypso after the ship used by Jacques Cousteau to explore the oceans. Two years later, NASA hired SpaceX and Boeing to ferry astronauts to the orbiting lab.

Under former president Barack Obama, NASA opted for a shift in how it operates. And Boeing and SpaceX will also be free to sell any spare capacity to others - to other space agencies and commercial concerns.

Dragon is another prototype capsule that's now being developed for NASA.

NASA has committed to pay $8 billion to Boeing and SpaceX, which in return are to deliver six trips carrying four astronauts each from now to 2024.
