Oscars 2020: Nominations announcement under way

The nominations for this year's Academy Awards are under way, with Joker and Once Upon a Hollywood now leading the field. The others were: "Parasite", "Little Women", "Marriage Story", "Jojo Rabbit" and "Ford v Ferrari".

While "Joker" was expected to do well Monday, the academy's overwhelming support for a movie that was far from a critical favourite was unexpected.

It certainly wasn't all bad, though, and numerous year's best movies nevertheless got their fair due. You can see John Cho and Issa Rae announce all of the nominees for this year's awards in the video embedded above.

There were some surprises.

It's been a tough awards season for Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez. Beyonce ("Lion King") missed out on her first Oscar nomination, for best song.

Had the women been nominated for the category, they would have joined the sole five female nominees in the Oscars' 92-year history.

Another Netflix movie, "Marriage Story", received six nominations - Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role (Adam Driver), Actress in a Leading Role (Scarlett Johansson), Actress in a Supporting Role (Laura Dern), Original Screenplay (Noah Baumbach) and Original Score (Randy Newman). The 92nd Academy Awards premieres Sunday, February 9th at 8 PM Eastern on ABC.

This year's ceremony, like last year's, will not have an overall host.

Britain's Cynthia Erivo, Anthony Hopkins, Jonathan Pryce and Florence Pugh are all up for acting prizes.

The nominees for best global film are: "Corpus Christi", Poland; "Honeyland", North Macdeonia; "Les Miserables", France; "Pain and Glory", Spain; "Parasite", South Korea. ABC will again broadcast the show, viewership for which a year ago rose 12% to 29.6 million.
