The Des Moines Register/CNN poll, widely considered the most authoritative in Iowa, revealed on Friday that Sanders has garnered the support of 20 per cent of likely Democrat caucus-goers, reports Xinhua news agency.
Iowa voters cast ballots in February 3 party caucuses in the first contest in the state-by-state process of selecting a Democratic challenger to Republican President Donald Trump in the November 3 general election. 'He's got a firmer grip on his supporters than the rest of his compatriots'. NY entrepreneur Andrew Yang, who was the sole nonwhite candidate on the stage at last month's debate, in Los Angeles, also fell short for this round, with support from 5% of Iowa voters in the new poll. Candidates were required to have received 5% in at least four national or DNC approved advance polls (Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada), or 7% in two first state polls. South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is a close second, followed by Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren.
But Biden regains a sharp advantage in the 35 to 49 age group (41%-16%), and among voters older than 65 there is no contest: Biden enjoys 68% popularity, with second-placed Sanders floundering at 8%.
Another billionaire who has weak support in Iowa but is also spending heavily on ads and rising in the polls elsewhere is former New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.
Voters in the Hawkeye State will see the candidates go head to head only one more time before they go to the caucuses to make their final decision.
