The Japanese government said it plans more tests of dozens of elderly people while it carries out investigations into any possible issues with hygiene control on the ship.

Health ministry officials said Monday they are double-checking the results and could not immediately release the exact figure.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - A Caribbean Princess cruise was cut short following a gastrointestinal outbreak aboard the ship caused it to be denied entry to at least one island before it headed to its home port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Monday.

"The ship is not in quarantine", the operator said in a statement, adding there is "no reason to believe there are any cases of coronavirus on board". The total number of coronavirus-positive people on board is 130.

Crew members aboard the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship say they are terrified of catching the deadly coronavirus, yet aren't being afforded the same protections as the passengers they serve.

"The quarantine period of the #DiamondPrincess will come to an end on 19 February", the World Health Organization said in a tweet.

The passengers have been confined on the ship for six days with limited outdoor activities.
