To All the Boys I Loved Before, starring Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, was a huge hit for Netflix in 2018-so big, in fact, that many dubbed the summer it came out Netflix's "summer of love", and credited the streaming service with reviving the romantic comedy genre. "However, those little blurbs remind me that there's still so much more work to be done in the industry". I Still Love You picks up right where the first flick dropped off. As charmingly played by Jordan Fisher (who's appeared in the live TV adaptations of both Grease and Rent), he's also pretty appealing. Obviously, I asked whether they're Team Peter or Team John Ambrose, but more on that later. When people watch the movie, John Ambrose and Jordan Fisher, they just pop off the screen. Peter, who got to be the just-about-perfect love interest in To All The Boys, has to be flawed enough that the relationship he has with Lara Jean seems like it could plausibly be threatened by John Ambrose. What else do you need, really, on Valentine's Day?
When it comes to making the first move, Condor shared that she was the one to reach out to her long-term boyfriend, actor and musician Anthony De La Torre. John Ambrose is a sweet, thoughtful piano-playing angel.
As a 31-year-old, married feminist, I was rooting for Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor), from Netflix's To All The Boys. series to have some fun. They're totally smitten, go on these adult-like dates to Italian restaurants but then balance it out with an amusement park montage where they share many laughs in a bumper vehicle ride. When Margot advises Lara Jean to get a job, she starts volunteering at a nursing home where she meets the feisty Stormy.
"I think Peter challenges Lara Jean", Condor said. All the while, Peter is seeming less like the person she loves. And his charming, thoughtful, nerdy ways don't just warm Lara Jean's heart - many viewers are feeling the same way. "So I think that was important to have in the movie because it showed that we talked about the uncomfortable things". There were a lot of different ways that that could go if he wasn't Peter Kavinsky. I Still Love You is stylish, with a handsome pastel colour palette and a fashionable electro-pop soundtrack (featuring some modern remakes of '80s classics like "Age of Consent" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun").
The audience may be divided on whether they will be Team Peter or Team John, but the end result is one that can be accepted by all regardless of their initial opinion.
A still from To All the Boys: PS I Still Love You.
