As of Thursday, more than 250 new deaths were reported within 24 hours, according to the World Health Organization's most recent situation report.

Many cruises in the region are at risk of being cancelled, while others now sailing are skipping stops in China, Hong Kong and Singapore, where the number of infections stands at 58.

Hubei province, which is at the epicenter of the outbreak, earlier reported 4,823 new cases with 116 deaths.

Heilongjiang province in the northeast reported two new deaths, with the other fatalities in the provinces of Anhui and Henan and the municipality of Chongqing.

Reports in state-run media said provincial Communist Party boss Jiang Chaoliang had been sacked as secretary of the Hubei Provincial Committee, and Ma Guoqiang had been removed as party chief in the provincial capital Wuhan. A total of 1,310 deaths have been reported from Hubei.

"We are a little disappointed that we haven't been invited in and we're a little disappointed in the lack of transparency coming from the Chinese", Larry Kudlow, the director of the National Economic Council, told reporters.

The number of new cases included 3,095 clinically diagnosed cases, which have been seen as confirmed cases. The first cases emerged in December in Wuhan.

The province also saw 690 patients discharged from hospital after recovery on Thursday, including 214 clinically diagnosed cases.

The fluctuations in China's official figures, including a huge leap in numbers after clinical diagnostic methods were altered mid-week, has heightened concerns about Beijing's handling of the crisis and the accuracy of vital data.

Authorities have placed some 56 million people in Hubei under quarantine since late last month, in an unprecedented effort to stop the new coronavirus from spreading.

Speaking about the first four days of his illness to Bloomberg, he said: 'I suffered from a high fever and pains that tortured every part of my body.

Some cities in Hubei tightened restrictions this week, sealing off neighborhoods in what they liken to "war-time" measures.

Kudlow's comments contrasted with Trump's apparent confidence in China, with the United States leader telling a radio show that Xi is "extremely capable" and that the USA was "working with them" and "sending a lot of people". There are now several hundred coronavirus cases in 27 countries outside of China.

The patient returned to the country on February 7 on a State Department-chartered flight.

Another 44 people aboard a cruise ship that has been quarantined for over a week in Japan's Yokohama harbor tested positive for coronavirus Thursday, Japanese health officials said.

The Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix, set for Shanghai on April 19, was postponed, as was Singapore's rugby sevens tournament scheduled for April 11-12, a source said.
