US Coronavirus Test Kits Are Flawed And 'Inconclusive', CDC Confirms

In San Diego, California, a second person evacuated from Wuhan, China, to a US Marine base was diagnosed with the virus, raising the US tally to 14, the CDC said.

According to UC San Diego Health, they report caring for three patients who were transferred from federal quarantine at MCAS Miramar.

The patient is among a group of people under a federal quarantine order due to their recent return to the US on a State Department-chartered flight that arrived on February 7, 2020.

The CDC has alerted laboratories that one component of the coronavirus testing kit may have performance issues and need to be replaced. The person, who was not identified, is now isolated at home.

The female patient is in good condition at the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

"There will likely be additional cases in the coming days and weeks, including among other people recently returned from Wuhan", the CDC said.

More than 800 Americans and family members evacuated from China aboard State Department-chartered flights since late last month have been placed under quarantine - the first imposed by the CDC in 50 years - at one of five U.S. military bases in California, Texas and Nebraska, according to the CDC. She was returned to the hospital on Monday after testing positive for the virus.

Passengers board buses after arriving on an airplane carrying USA citizens being evacuated from Wuhan, China, at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, Calif., on January 29, 2020.

The CDC on Tuesday released 195 people from quarantine at March Air Reserve Base in California after holding them there for 14 days.

The fast-spreading virus has killed 1,370 people and infected about 60,000, almost all in China, constraining the world's second largest economy and handing the ruling Communist Party one of its most hard tests in years.

No deaths from the virus have been reported in the United States.

In all, Japan has 247 confirmed cases of the new virus that apparently started in Wuhan.

Officials have not said how numerous kits are flawed.

During trial runs in some states, the kits produced results that were "inconclusive", said Dr. Messonnier. All passengers were subject to 14-day quarantines starting the day they left China.
