XFL week one recap

XFL's Wildcats fire ex Giant Pepper Johnson after just one game

The D.C. Defenders are coming off an exciting win over the Seattle Dragons in a hard-fought XFL debut game. "While these decisions are hard, we have given this significant thought", Wildcats general manager and head coach Winston Moss said in a news release.

In their place, the league invented a three-tiered system: An offense can score one extra point by reaching the end zone from the 2-yard line, two points if they score from the 5-yard line or three points from the 10. With it being only one game into the season it was hard to believe. They played in the Metlife Stadium where the New York Giants typically play.

Interestingly, Circa Sportsbook in Las Vegas opened Week 1 point totals for all four games at 44 on Thursday before other sportsbooks began posting significantly higher numbers in the 50-52 range on Friday. Tampa Bay is the smallest favorite of Week 2.

The Wildcats also appeared to cut Anthony Johnson, their defensive captain. We hope they play better in Week 2, as Johnson should be active, but defensive problems are worrisome.

It's worth noting that the Renegades and the Wildcats were without their presumptive starting quarterbacks in Landry Jones and Josh Johnson, but my early-season prediction is a DC Defenders vs. Houston Roughnecks 2020 XFL Championship.

This is the second match of the week between undefeated teams. Even RB substitute Keith Ford had a solid 4-26-1 for St. Louis. The Houston offensive lists four receivers as offensive headlines without wings closed on the list.

The XFL's Los Angeles Wildcats made a series of unusual moves Monday, two days after losing their first game in the league's inaugural season.
