Senate Passes $2 Trillion Coronavirus Relief Package

Senate passes coronavirus rescue package on unanimous vote

'Our Expectation Is This Bill Passes Tonight'

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California said he wants to make sure the U.S. House of Representatives reviews the legislation, but doesn't slow it down and moves it to Trump's desk "as soon as possible".

"Like all compromises, this bill is far from flawless", Schumer wrote in a letter to Democrats on Wednesday.

Rep. Justin Amash of MI, an independent who left the Republican Party previous year, called the package a "raw deal for the people" in a tweet shortly after it was announced, but clarified later in the day that he will not delay the bill by objecting to unanimous consent.

"A massive drafting error in the current version of the coronavirus relief legislation could have devastating outcome: Unless the bill if fixed, there is a strong incentive for employees to be laid off instead of going to work", they said in a statement. There is a separate pot of about US$350 billion for small businesses.

Business owners in MA said that money couldn't come soon enough.

Prohibition of businesses controlled by the president, vice president, members of Congress and heads of executive branch departments receiving loans or investments from the Treasury programs. All the Senate can do is to give them the resources to do it. Weekly benefits will rise by $600 as well and more types of workers will be covered under the unemployment insurance scheme.

Underscoring the effort's sheer magnitude, the bill finances a response with a price tag that equals half the size of the entire $4 trillion annual federal budget. St. Patrick's day was normally a hugely busy day for her.

Schumer specifically praised the beefed-up $260 billion unemployment package, calling it "unemployment insurance on steroids" that would provide "a social safety net wide enough to catch the millions of American workers who became unemployed virtually overnight". McConnell said senators would have 24 hours notice if they need to return before then.

During a conference call with House Democrats Tuesday afternoon, at least one Blue Dog Democrat said Pelosi's House bill "set people off" and angered struggling constituents in moderate districts who think Democrats were trying to seek partisan wins like the "Green New Deal", according to a person familiar with the call.

"It's going to take a shock to the system to do that", he said. This was a key Democratic initiative, which Schumer dubbed "unemployment insurance on steroids".

Mnuchin, representing the administration, said the president would sign the measure.

The package authorizes $1,200 checks for all adults who earn up to $75,000 and creates enormous loan programs for businesses. "The longer it takes, the harder it will be to start up our economy". A companion appropriations package ballooned as well, growing from a $46 billion White House proposal to more than $300 billion, which dwarfs earlier disasters - including Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy combined. "Graham and the others, they voted for a trillion dollars in tax breaks for the 1% and large corporations and now they're really anxious that a low-income worker might receive extended unemployment plus $600 a week", Sanders said.
