One employee has now been confirmed dead after an explosion and fire overnight at Prince George's Lakeland mill.

Northern Health Communications Director Steve Raper says the deceased was one of four transported out of Prince George by air ambulance.

"We can confirm unfortunately, there is a fatality. 13 have been released, but we have six in serious condition at UHNBC at this time," said Raper.

Fire crews remain at Lakeland as the fire continues to burn although firefighters do have solid control of the site.

The planer mill has been spared.

All of those injured were on shift in the sawmill portion of the mill which has been completely destroyed.

RCMP have begun an investigation into the fire which began at about 9:30pm on Monday night.
