Funding for water meters in the Town of Comox has progressed to the Draft 2012-15 Financial Plan.

$25,000 of Gas Tax Funding from the province is being set aside each year of the new financial plan to pay for water meter installations at the homes of residents who want them.

"We don't know how we're going to fund our wish-list and it wasn't in our community plan so I don't know why we're considering it at all," exclaimed Councillor Tom Grant, leading the push against further funding for water meters.

"Devoting money to this is probably not the way to go," agreed Councillor Maureen Swift, saying there's no point installing water meters if metered customers can still elect to pay the non-metered rate.

Grant compared the voluntary installation program to a running toilet, dragging money down the drain.

"Gas Tax money isn't monopoly money. It's real money we can use for real projects to benefit the town," said Grant.

The vote was close but the $25,000 per year funding has been included in the Draft Financial Plan, after a 4-3 vote.

The draft budgets for Police Protection, Marina, Garbage, Water and Sewer also progressed to the overall budget draft, which will still be reviewed before being passed as the official 2012-15 Financial Plan.
