NewsSnowbirds out, fighter jets in
The Snowbirds have completed their final training flight in the Comox Valley, for the time being, but CFB Comox is now busy with the arrival of the real-deal fighter jets.
A brightly painted demonstration CF-18 has been shooting across Comox Valley skies, but the jets that will be in training for the next two weeks are all painted grey.
"The aircraft will be taking part in in the Royal Canadian Navy’s Task Group Exercise 2012 (TGEX) off the west coast of Vancouver Island," explained Lieutenant Trevor Reid at 19 Wing. "During the exercise, CF-18 fighter pilots will also take part in air-to-air combat exercises."
Local residents can expect to see and hear fighter aircraft, air-to-air refueling aircraft and long range patrol aircraft taking off and landing around CFB Comox.
Even louder than the snowbirds, the CF-18's will be doing some of their training at night, though they'll mainly be out to sea, only coming in to Comox to land.
"This training is necessary for pilots to experience flying in different environments and conditions to prepare them for operations, "said Lt. Reid. "19 Wing Comox is appreciative of Comox Valley residents’ understanding and support."
TGEX’s are annual exercises involving various Canadian Forces units and personnel. Participating units prepare for a wide range of potential operations and missions to strengthen Canada’s ability to work in a multi-national and joint environment.
TGEX aims at honing each unit’s operational skills, enhancing Canada’s maritime contribution to global security across a broad spectrum of operations.
